Sitges Fiesta Mayor is the “Main Party” in celebration of the town’s patron saint and is one of the most important events of the entire year culminating in a stunning 30 minute firework display that lights up the Mediterranean.

The Fiesta Mayor Fireworks are one of the highlights of the entire year.

Fireworks, Giants & Dragons!

Fiesta Mayor is when the town of Sitges hosts its annual festival in celebration of the patron saint, Sant Bartolomeu. The Fiesta Mayor includes music, dance and parades, including a spectacular firework display which can be seen from all over the town, or, if you are lucky enough to own a boat, from out at sea.

Book a front-facing sea-view room at the Hotel Calipolis for some of the best views of the fireworks spectacular. Truly breathtaking.

The Event

Wednesday 20th August – Tuesday 26th August – Note most of the events take place on the day before the 23rd and the 24th. These two dates never change as they are part of the Saints Day Celebration.

The program is wide and varied, so pace yourselves. Make time for at least one of the street processions and the human towers (Castellers) in Cap De la Vila, and of course the main fireworks.

The Fireworks

Saturday 23rd August, 2025 – From 11 pm.

Expect a breathtaking 30‑minute pyrotechnic show launched from the paseo by the beach in front of the church.

Tickets available for a private seating area offering cava with the display; limited capacity, so reserve via the Sitges Tourist Office or Fiesta Mayor Commission stand.

Or do like most locals, and head to the beach with a drinks and a blanket and watch the fireworks unfold overhead and the sounds of the sea.

Top Tip! Arrive at the beach by 10 pm at the latest. Arrive on the paseo by 10.30 pm. Try and get a spot right by the balustrades on Psg Ribera. This way you avoid anyone in front of you blocking your view. Hold firm! Every child, little old lady and local will try and push their way past you. Its a battle, one worth fighting for.

History of the Event

The Festa Major de Sant Bartomeu dates back to the 14th century, when Sitges officially adopted Saint Bartholomew as its patron saint.

The event has grown from a strictly religious observance into one of Catalonia’s most cherished folk festivals.

Though rooted in Catholic tradition, it reflects centuries of Catalan identity, resistance, and community storytelling through music, dance, and public spectacle.

Human Towers, Sardanas, Fire Beasts and Giants

By the 1800s, the festival took on many of the core elements still seen today: castellers (human towers), sardanes (traditional dance), folk figures, and fireworks.

It became a showcase of local pride and creativity — with handcrafted beasts and elaborately choreographed dances passed down through generations.

The festival’s structure—processions, vigília, civic parades—has remained consistent, while costumes and music have evolved.

Sitges’ giants (gegants) are a central part of both the Fiesta Mayor in August and Santa Tecla in September. These towering figures represent symbolic characters in Catalan history and folklore, carried and animated by dancers hidden within.

Drac (Dragon) & Àliga (Eagle) – fire beasts carried through town, shooting sparks and smoke, representing protective and purifying forces.

6:00 pm – “Fiesta Mayor de Todos” — Gitanas Dance with Diversity (La Torreta) Performed by Fundació Ave Maria participants.
7:00 pm – Concert: Guitarreando la Fiesta (La Torreta) Long‑running Sitges guitar celebration from Agrupació de Balls Populars.
8:00 pm – Transfer of the Image of Sant Bartomeu (Parish Church → Carrer Santa Bàrbara, 5) Accompanied by Cobla Maricel; awards presentation. Route: Baluard → Town Hall Square → Carrer Major → Cap de la Vila → Parellades → Plaça Pou Vedre → Santa Bàrbara.

22nd August

6:15 pm – Dressing of Gegants Moros (Palau del Rei Moro) — community event.
7:15 pm – Procession of new Gegants de la Vila, Drac & Àliga (Plaça dels Artistes → La Plaça → Town Hall) Joined by Gegants Moros and Agrupació Musical Suburband.
8:00 pm – Première Dance “Batecs 1980” (La Torreta) by Colla Noies del Ball de Bastons.
9:00 pm – Castellers Rehearsal (Town Hall Square).
9:00 pm – Flag Handover Ceremony (Parish Church), poems and Goigs. Afterwards – Parade to President’s home (Illes Balears, 9) Route: Baluard → Fonollar → Baluard Vidal i Quadras → Port de n’Alegre → Garraf → Torrent de la Pleta → Joan Maragall → Pompeu Fabra → Tarragona → Aragó → Illes Balears.

23rd August - Fireworks Night!

12:00 pm – Entrance of Grallers** Performers include Joan Olarte, Colla Bon Vent, Escola de Grallers… Route: Sant Francesc → Cap de la Vila → Carrer Major → Town Hall Square.
2:00 pm – 21 Mortar Shots & Sardanes at Cap de la Vila, including fireworks commemorating Grup d’Estudis Sitgetans 50th anniversary.
~2:05 pm – Parade of folk dances & entremesos (Plaça del Ajuntament → Carrer Major → Cap de la Vila), concluding with a full Moixiganga performance and fireworks.
6:00 pm – Castellers performance (Cap de la Vila).
7:00 pm – Civic Procession collecting the Tabernacle → Church. Route: Illes Balears, 9 → Aragó → Camí Can Pau Xic → Sant Honorat → Emili Picó → Jesús → Ànimes → Sant Isidre → Sant Gaudenci → Sant Francesc → Espalter → Santa Bàrbara → Can Bóta Park → Mossèn Joan Llopis Pi → Pou Vedre → Parellades → Cap de la Vila → Carrer Major → Town Hall Square → Baluard.
11:00 pm – Fireworks Display from La Fragata, La Punta, and breakwaters by Pirotècnia Igual. – Private seating with cava available for €5 (book at Commission booth, Llibreria Universal, Palereria La Tribu). Advanced reservation required for reduced‑mobility access.
After fireworks – Descent of folk dances down La Punta stairs, parade to Monument to El Greco and back via Carrer Nou with fireworks.
Midnight – Sardana dancing at Cap de la Vila with Cobla Sitgetana.
12:30 am onward – Night concerts (Pg. de la Ribera) featuring Waikiki and Bulma Beat DJ.

24th August

19.30h From Baluard Sant Bartomeu’s Procession Circuit around town with the authorities, the Saint and the folkloric dances and musicians, accompanied by all the Sitgetanas. The route is as follows: Baluard, Fonollar, Sant Joan, Davallada, Barcelona, Santiago Rusiñol, Jesús, Sant Bartomeu, Sant Gaudenci, Sant Francesc, Cap de la Vila, Parellades, Bonaire, Passeig de la Ribera, Nou, Major, Plaça de l’Ajuntament and Baluard.
When the Saint is being returned to the parish church, in the plaza del Baluard in front of the church all the fires and crackers are lit, the dances are carried out to their respective music and a small firework display takes place. It is, in all probability, one of the most emotional and awe inspiring moments of the fiesta.
22.30 – Approximately – LAST DANCE OF THE “BÈSTIES DE FOC” AND GEGANTS (Beasts of fire and giants)With the Saint restored to the parish church, the gegants, drac and àliga (papier-mâché giants, dragons and eagle) dance their farewell at Plaça de l’Ajuntament.
